Everyone will be aware that HMRC issues late filing penalties to anyone that does not submit their tax return by the filing deadline, which for many was 31 January 2019 for the year ended 5 April 2018.
Usually these penalties are issued in February, however this year they will not be issued until April.
In addition, if you do not submit your return by 1st May 2019 the penalties will increase to daily penalties of £10 per day.
For some, the issue of the initial penalty notices act a reminder that their return is outstanding. The late issue of the these notices could mean that many may not remember that they have not submitted their returns, meaning they will have less time to correct the position before the daily penalties are charged.
Apparently the delay is down to Brexit in that HMRC staff are dealing with queries on the UK leaving the EU.
If you have not submitted your tax return for the year ended 5 April 2018 I would recommend that you do so before the daily penalties kick in. If you need any assistance in submitting your return please do not hesitate to contact us.
